Or can I just wash and let it dry naturally and it will be straight and smooth?
I have very thick, wavy hair. If I get a straight perm, will i have to blow dry it to keep it smooth?
More than likely you will still have to blowdry, to make it look smooth and straight. You may also have a new problem...frizz. I would think twice about getting a straight perm

if you get a perm then you can do either because the perm has done all of the work.

You can blow dry it, or use a flat iron after it dries. Try uses that new straightening looks shampoo and conditioner. I don't know the name, it's on a commercial. This will help some. Or just try any conditioner, if you plan on flat ironing. Also use some got to be serum to make it smooth.

One, I am a cosmetologist, and I have NEVER heard of a "straight perm". All I know if is a relaxer where the hair is made straight using a harsh thioglycolate chemical. If that is what you are referring to, DO NOT DO IT! Unless your hair is VERY curly, it does not need relaxed. My recommendation, invest in a quality blow dryer, large ceramic round brush and an expensive flat iron. It will take some time to get the curl out of your hair, but you should be able to then get a couple of days out of it. Also, try the Paul Mitchell Super Skinny line of products. They actually make the hair strand smaller therefore your hair is not as bulky. The Super Skinny Serum will cut your blow drying time by at least half. Would you rather spend a nice chunk of change on better products, or run the risk of your hair literally melting off of your head with a relaxer? Something to think about!
